Policy Team shines in Houston

Despite facing new competition in Houston, all four Cornell Policy entries advanced to elimination rounds.

Last weekend, Cornell’s Policy Debate Team flew to Houston Texas to compete in the University of Houston National College Tournament. Despite facing new competition from Southern and West Coast teams, all Cornell teams advanced to elimination rounds.

Beginning with our JV entry, comprised of Mia Barratt and Sarah Thacker, they won the Semifinalist title in their division. In the Novice division, three teams comprised of Esmeralda Duarte and Riley Smith, April Vorontosva and Jim Wang, and Anand Patel and Karen Fernandez-Rua competed against 19 other teams within their division. Esmeralda Duarte, Riley Smith, April Vorontosva, and Jim Wang all became Quarterfinalists, while Anand Patel and Karen Fernandez-Rua became Octofinalists. Alongside the novice teams’ successes, Jim Wang also won the 9th-place Novice speaker award.

Overall, the Cornell Policy Debate team showed up and shined in sunny Houston last weekend!
