Policy Team wins Phyllis Schatz Debate Invitational at Binghamton
Cornell Policy wins big at first 23-24 season tournament in both Varsity and Novice divisions.
The Cornell Policy Debate Team attended the Phyllis Schatz Debate Invitational at Binghamton from September 22nd to 24th. In the Varsity division, Devansh Jotsinghani and Praveen Gunendran won the entire tournament, beating the United States Military Academy in the final round. Praveen and Devansh also ranked as the 4th and 5th Best Varsity speakers. In Novice, two teams, one comprising Oscar Zhuo and Sean Sung, and the other, Piper Kohlenberger and Mia Barratt, were Novice champions. Both teams won in the semi-finals followed by a Cornell closeout in the finals. Another Novice team, Logan Hanchett and Sarah Thacker, were Novice quarterfinalists. Seven novice debaters ranked in the top 15 Best Speakers at Binghamton, winning 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 11th, and 14th place.
Cornell finished 1st place in the tournament for both Novice and Varsity categories, along with claiming several Top Speaker spots. The team is now preparing to head to Houston, Texas in a few weeks for a national tournament!
