Speech Team Attains National Qualifications
Through 4 different weekends, the Cornell team has been award across genres
The Cornell Speech Team started the season off strong, traveling in late September to D.C for the Virginia is for Lovers Tournament. The team brought 10 competitors, including many novices. Students competed across many events. Novices Jaliah Smith and Jenniviv Bansah finished 2nd in Duo at their first tournament, their first leg on the road to nationals qualification.
The team also competed in two regular season online tournaments, including the East Coast Early Bird and the Bowling Green Cyberfalcon. Students reached finals in informative, impromptu, and extemporaneous.
Next, a small squad traveled to Tuscaloosa to compete in the University of Alabama swing. The highly competitive tournament had teams from across the country, including many top programs. The Cornell team had a strong showing, with finals in extemporaneous, impromptu, and communication analysis. Margot Treadwell finished 2nd in Communication Analysis.
Finally, the team competed in Fall Districts in a virtual tournament that had opportunities to auto-qualify for nationals. The team entered 10 students and finished with 8 qualifications to the American Forensics Association National Speech Tournament in Spring 2023. Firstly, Senior Sydney Browne qualified in impromptu, informative, and persuasive and was recognized as the top IE Speaker. Junior Scott Siegel qualified in extemporaneous and informative. Junior Asha Prabhat won persuasive, also qualifying. Finally, first-years Hannah Quigley and Eva Egeghy qualified in informative and after dinner speaking respectively.
