There has been broad recognition of a national "care crisis" — particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic — where family caregivers are under acute strain, care support is often unaffordable, and many paid care workers are devalued and poorly paid. What does this care crisis look like in New York State and the U.S.? How can it be effectively addressed? This webinar will delve into recent research and work that explores the weight of unpaid caregiving, the challenges of expanding access to care support (including childcare and long-term care), and the impact of recent policy changes on access to care and the workforce of care providers.
In this webinar, researchers from Cornell University's ILR School will highlight the strain of caregiving in New York, sharing recent data from the Empire State Poll on the effects of unpaid caregiving on New Yorkers' paid employment. Guest speakers will discuss issues surrounding access to affordable childcare, lifting standards for care workers, and the impact of impending cuts to Medicaid, Supplemental Security Insurance, and other types of federal funding on the availability and affordability of care in New York State.
