Scheinman Conflict Resolution Club Update

The Scheinman Conflict Resolution Club (SCRC) has hosted regular educational events this semester, including negotiation simulation exercises and informative discussions from Vice President Clyde Lederman and Director of Outreach Sean Sung. Members have also had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of conflict resolution through guest talks from ILR faculty and alumni.

On October 24th, Scheinman Institute Board of Advisors member and ILR alum Richard “Dick” Fincher ’73 spoke to the SCRC about multicultural negotiations and his experience in labor arbitration. Fincher discussed his work in alternative dispute resolution and the ILR Navajo & Hopi and Vietnam Engaged Learning Programs, both of which he developed.

On October 30th, the SCRC had a round table discussion with the 2025-26 Jean McKelvey Neutral-In-Residence Hilary Mofsowitz. Mofsowitz, who began her career in South Africa, has 27 years of experience as a neutral, mediator and arbitrator in labor and employment, specifically workplace dispute resolution. She discussed the similarities and differences in mediation and arbitration practices between South Africa and the United States, including the process by which arbitrators are assigned to a case, the powers of an arbitrator, and how parties agree to enter arbitration.

Throughout the rest of the year, the SCRC plans to engage in a series of mediation, arbitration, and multiparty negotiation competitions with other schools. Members will participate in training from experienced professionals in the field. The SCRC looks forward to continued educational events with ILR faculty and alumni, which provides members with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of conflict resolution.
