Based on their professional accomplishments and commitments to ILR and Cornell, Joan Parker ’70, M.S. ’73, Ph.D. ’74 will receive the Groat Award and Glenn R. August ’82 will receive the Alpern Award.

Parker is a nationally recognized arbitrator and mediator of labor and employment disputes.
She serves as a permanent arbitrator under numerous collective bargaining agreements and is an active employment arbitrator, mediator, and factfinder in the non-union sector.
Formerly a professor and director of the Graduate Program in Industrial Relations and Human Resources at Rutgers University, Parker has written books and articles on labor and employment relations topics.
At Rutgers, she taught graduate courses in labor law, arbitration, mediation and alternative dispute resolution.
Parker continues to teach at Rutgers as a visiting lecturer and is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences across the country.
The founder and principal of her firm, Joan Parker ADR, which specializes in workplace investigations, fact-finding, and settlement counseling, she has been active with the ILR School for many years.
Parker has served on the Dean’s Advisory Council since 2006 and recently joined the Scheinman Institute Board of Advisors.
He serves as global head of the firm's distressed investment activities. August has played leadership roles in many restructurings and, since 1987, has served on nine corporate boards.
Chairman of the board of directors of OHA Investment Corporation, a publicly traded business development company, August has been with the firm for over 30 years. He co-founded the predecessor investment firm to Oak Hill Advisors in 1987 and took responsibility for the firm's credit and distressed investment activities in 1990.
Beginning in 1996, he co-founded each of Oak Hill Advisors' funds, and he serves as the managing partner of each of their management entities. He previously worked in the mergers and acquisitions department at Morgan Stanley in New York and London.
August earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, and serves as a trustee of Horace Mann School and The Mount Sinai Medical Center. A director of the 92nd Street Y, August has been active with ILR for many years, and has served on the Dean’s Advisory Council since 2013.
