Hyman Addressing Policymakers

Associate Professor Louis Hyman will meet with the U.S. House of Representatives’ New Democrat Coalition Future of Work Task Force in Washington, D.C., Wednesday.

The New Democrat Coalition is a sub-caucus of the House Democratic Caucus. Its Future of Work Task Force is investigating how work is changing and what policymakers should consider “to make sure all Americans have an opportunity to succeed in the 21st century economy.”

Drawing from his work as a labor historian, Hyman plans to talk about:

•     rural digital work
•     second industrious revolution
•     shift/gig labor
•     precarious labor
•     financial policy of the New Deal
•     freelancing
•     climate change and work

Wednesday’s informal, hearing-style discussion will focus on the history of economic change and forecasts for the future. The conversation was streamed on the New Democrat Coalition’s Facebook page.

Hyman, director of ILR’s Institute for Workplace Studies and founder of its “Future of Work” series, will present with two other panelists, Jason Furman, former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, and Kristin Sharp, executive director of Shift: The Commission on Work, Workers, and Technology.
