Konvitz Lecture

ILR faculty members Nick Salvatore and Jefferson Cowie will discuss "The Long Exception: An Interpretation of the New Deal from FDR to Obama" at the Milton Konvitz Memorial Lecture beginning at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Professor Milton Konvitz, an ILR founder, was an authority on constitutional and labor law, and civil and human rights.

He taught at the university from 1946 until his retirement in 1973.

Irwin Jacobs '56 was one of many inspired by Konvitz through "American Ideals," his popular course on the U.S. Constitution.

Jacobs, who graduated from Cornell with a degree in electrical engineering, decided with his wife, Joan Jacobs '54, to honor the late professor through an annual lecture in his name.

The lecture was founded in 2006 by the San Diego, Calif., couple.

Irwin Jacobs – a co-founder of Qualcomm Inc., a Fortune 500 provider of wireless technology and services -- graduated from Cornell with a degree in electrical engineering. Joan Jacobs graduated from the College of Human Ecology.

Konvitz, active as a scholar until his death in 2003 at age 95, wrote nine books, including Fundamental Liberties of a Free People: Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly.
