Olympics Experience
Josh Klein ’18 spent a month in PyeongChang, South Korea, working for NBC Sports as a Winter Olympics intern.
“As a daytime runner, I provided research, IT and logistical support to the production staff, talent and crew of the NBC Olympics daytime show.”
Klein also led private tours of the NBC on-site studio and coordinated guest services for NBC talent, VIPs and International Olympics Committee members.
“Highlights of my experience include escorting the gold medal U.S. Men’s curling team around PyeongChang, sitting in the green room with Shaun White who won a gold medal in snowboarding, and taking members of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee on a private tour of NBC’s studios."
Did your ILR background help you do your internship in any way?
Although my position with NBC in PyeongChang did not fall specifically within one of the departments in ILR, the ILR School did help in refining several skills that were necessary for me, both to obtain and complete my internship. Classes that focused, at least in part, on leadership, writing, and public speaking heavily contributed to my role as a Runner on the Daytime Show.
Do you want to work in TV or sports after graduation?
“After graduation, I will be going into consulting where I aim to gain a strong business foundation, learn about different industry and business challenges, and receive exposure to senior leadership at some of the country’s top companies. I hope to apply my experiences, learnings and knowledge from my consulting job to the sports media industry someday.”
Any other interesting takeaways you would like to share?
“In the past, as an average viewer of the Olympics on NBC, I had put little thought into the extent of NBC’s operations and efforts to broadcast the Olympics. Although audiences can likely appreciate the grand scale of a global sports event like the Olympics, like me, they probably underestimate the amount of time, people and work that goes into presenting the Olympics to the country. Even after having the chance to watch the production of the Olympics firsthand, I am still astounded at how everything comes together so perfectly.”
“I'm thrilled I had the opportunity to work on and be part of a show watched daily by millions of people nationwide, and I feel very fortunate to have been part of the wonderful Daytime team. As one of the producers told me, “there’s just something special about the Olympics.” It was an honor and a privilege to watch NBC’s executives lead Olympic operations and production and contributing to NBC’s coverage.”
