"A Time for Change"
ILR is partnering with Cornell's Clinical & Translational Science Center, Cooperative Extension New York City and Weill Cornell Medical College in an international health care reform conference May 11-12.
"A Time for Change: Restructuring America's Health Care Delivery System" in New York City is designed for health care practitioners, management and labor leaders, researchers and policymakers.
The Business and Labor Coalition of New York is a co-sponsor of the event. ILR's Pierce Memorial Fund and Cornell University’s Institute for the Social Sciences are also partners.
"This conference comes at a critical phase of President Obama's health care reform initiatives. It provides an opportunity to examine delivery system changes that will improve patient care, reduce costs and increase the integration of care," said Peter Lazes, director of ILR's Health Care Transformation Project.
Fifteen panels of health care experts from across the nation and Europe will frame conference discussion around three areas:
- Creating integrated delivery systems
- Engaging the work force
- Using technology to improve patient care.
Keynote speakers are Dr. David Skorton, cardiologist and president of Cornell University, and Dr. Jay Crosson of Kaiser Permanente. Crosson is vice chairman of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and former executive director of the Permanente Federation.
Conference presenters include Dr. Julianne Imperato-McGinley of the Clinical & Translational Center at Weill Cornell Medical College and a professor of medicine at the college.
Associate dean for translational research and education, she is the director and principal investigator of the Clinical & Translational Center. Imperato-McGinley is also the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Distinguished Professor of Medicine in Endocrinology and chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
Dr. Rainu Kaushal, who is associate professor of pediatrics, medicine and public health, and chief of the Division of Quality and Medical Informatics at Weill Cornell Medical College, will also present at the conference.
Additional conference speakers include John August of Kaiser Permanente-Coalition of Unions, Christine Bamford of NHS Wales and Amy Edmundson of Harvard University.
Also, author Suzanne Gordon, author John Kenagy, Rob Mechanic of MIT, Steve Spear of MIT, Paul Starr of Princeton University, and union and management leaders and researchers from the United States and Europe.

The conference will be held at The Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 11-12.
