Training for Advocacy
Free training by the Western New York Human Trafficking Task Force will be sponsored by the ILR School Outreach Division July 29.
Open to the public, the training is designed for social service providers, attorneys, court staff, educational and medical personnel, and other professionals.
It will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the ILR Conference Center in King-Shaw Hall.
Human trafficking indicators, the scope of the problem in Western New York and barriers faced by immigrants are among issues which will be discussed.
Task force members presenting at the event include:
- Kerry Q. Battenfeld, a victim services community educator and advocate at the International Institute of Buffalo
- Emma L. Buckthal, an immigration staff attorney at the Volunteer Lawyers Project
- Todd E. Bunnenberg, a victim assistance coordinator for the Department of Homeland Security.
ILR Associate Dean of Outreach Susanne Bruyère said ILR and Cornell "are uniquely positioned to create a forum for meaningful dialogue on associated poignant issues such as labor rights, human rights, development economics, poverty, corporate social responsibility and human capital."
The event will be co-facilitated by Professors Arnab Basu and Nancy Chau of the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. Basu and Chau have conducted related research -- funded by groups such as the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany -- on transnational trafficking of women and children.
