U.S. Senate Confirms Krueger '83
Alan Krueger '83 has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Department of the Treasury’s assistant secretary for economic policy.
In the position, Krueger is responsible for review and analysis of domestic and international economic issues and financial market developments, according to Reuters.
Krueger has also been named the treasury's chief economist.
He will assist Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner in Geithner's role as managing trustee of the Social Security and Medicare trusts, States News Service reported.
Geithner said "I am pleased to welcome Alan to the Treasury Department and am confident that his wealth of experience will enable him to make invaluable contributions to our nation's economic recovery."
Krueger was confirmed May 6.
The Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University, Krueger has held a joint appointment there in the Economics Department and Woodrow Wilson School since 1987.
In 1994-95, Krueger served as chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor.
Widely published on the economics of education, unemployment, income distribution, social insurance, regulation, terrorism and the environment, Krueger received a doctorate from Harvard University in 1987.
He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and serves as chief economist for the Council for Economic Education.
