“WORK!” Returns with Episode 6 Now Available
After a hiatus due to the pandemic, “WORK! Exploring the future of work, labor and employment,” returns with a powerful lineup as Cornell ILR Dean Alex Colvin welcomes several leaders of the labor movement in the coming months. The mini-series begins with Randi Weingarten ’80, president of the American Federation of Teachers. Colvin and Weingarten examine the “return of the strike” and how Weingarten has worked to build community inside and outside of the union.
Before her election as union president in 2008, Weingarten served for 12 years as president of the United Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 2, representing approximately 200,000 educators in the New York City public school system. She also spent 10 years as the chair of New York City’s Municipal Labor Committee, an umbrella organization for the city’s 100-plus public sector unions.
A 1980 graduate of the ILR School, Weingarten was named in 2013 by the New York Observer as one of the most influential New Yorkers of the past 25 years. Washington Life magazine included Weingarten on its 2013 Power 100 list of influential leaders.
