Why did you choose the MILR program? 

I chose the MILR program because I wanted to help non-traditional workers overcome the challenges I faced as a frontline employee. I was drawn to the program's history and its professors, who are industry leaders in their specializations. I saw the MILR program as an opportunity to grow and contribute, and I was confident that I would be supported in my relocation and my goals of making an impactful change. I was initially unsure about whether to pursue graduate school, but my desire to help others motivated me to research my options. I was particularly intrigued by the MILR program's focus on non-traditional work initiatives. I also appreciated the program's strong reputation and its network of accomplished alumni. The MILR program admissions team was essential in helping me navigate the application process and find the resources I needed to make a decision. I especially appreciated their patience and follow-up, which set the MILR program apart from other programs I was considering. Big shout out to Darrie O’Connell! Ultimately, my decision to choose the MILR program was based on my desire to be in a supportive environment where I could make a difference. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with the MILR community.

What is your favorite part of MILR so far?

The highlight of my experience in the MILR program, both currently and consistently, is the vibrant exchange with my cohort. Each member brings a rich tapestry of life experiences, and I deeply appreciate the diverse conversations and unique perspectives they contribute to our personal and classroom discussions. The representation of various countries and cultures within the cohort is something truly commendable, reflecting legacies that their families can take pride in. This exposure has broadened my understanding of global traditions and customs, inspiring me to introduce these rich cultural elements to my own family.

What do you like the most about living in Ithaca?

Initially, Ithaca had to gradually win me over, as is often the case with any new location. The majestic landscapes and powerful waterfalls make it feel like a place out of a dream. If I were to encapsulate my experience, I'd say that Cayuga Lake stands out as my favorite spot. There were moments when I would simply sit by the lakeside, lost in my thoughts, or take my family sailing, creating opportunities to share new experiences and make lasting memories.

What is your favorite class/professor so far?

Selecting a favorite professor is tough, as I've gained valuable insights from all, but if I had to choose, it'd be a tie between Professor Karns and Professor Haggerty. Professor Karns encouraged me to approach Statistics with ambition and offered incredible support through study groups and office hours. This empowered me to confront new challenges. Professor Haggerty helped me recognize my transferable skills after transitioning from trucking and provided one-on-one coaching for my summer internship recruitment. Their dedication and extra effort made a lasting impact on me within the program.

Where did you intern last summer? 

My experience at GE Aerospace in Evandale, OH was a fantastic opportunity to apply my HR skills while gaining insights from a leading aerospace company. The fast-paced and challenging environment was exactly what I thrive in, and the people I worked with were equally eager to share their years of expertise in different aspects of the business.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are considering the MILR program?

I'd recommend asking plenty of questions. Keep in mind that the program's value largely depends on your efforts and decisions. You're in the process of preparing to be a future leader in a changing world, so think about how you can be dynamic and make a lasting impact. Embrace your authentic self, as diversity fuels innovation, and encourage diverse perspectives. Remember, "Get comfortable with being uncomfortable!"
