Interview: Alex Colvin speaks with Martin Scheinman about the pandemic and mediation

ILR's dean, Alex Colvin, spoke with Martin Scheinman ILR ’75, MS ‘76 about the work of arbitration and dispute resolution in the time of the pandemic.
 
Marty outlined some of the changes that the pandemic has had on his work of arbitration and mediation. He spoke of the direct impact and how that changed the way he and his firm has conducted arbitration, and expanded on how that has affected the broader approach people can take to dispute resolution.
 
For example, Marty discusses the change that physical space – how technology and virtual meetings affect the way people come together to discuss difficult and often emotionally charged situations.
 
Marty founded Scheinman Arbitration and Mediation Services (SAMS) after 40 years of practice to expand upon the professionalism and skill set which has made Marty one of the country’s leading arbitrators and mediators of workplace and business disputes. He has decided or helped resolve over 20,000 disputes. Throughout his career as a professional neutral, his work has evolved from primarily labor and management disputes to business, consumer and employment matters.
 
Marty and his wife, Laurie, are the benefactors of the Martin and Laurie Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution, ILR Cornell University and the Martin F. Scheinman Professor of Conflict Resolution at the ILR School.
