Herbert J. Vallier
Herbert “Herb” J. Vallier is an experienced board director and executive with over 30 years of leadership across healthcare, consumer goods, and higher education sectors. He retired in 2024 as Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer, and CEO of SmartHealth Solutions for Ascension, leading workforce strategy and human capital management for a $28 billion national health system comprising 134,000 associates and 35,000 affiliated providers. Herb currently serves on the Board of Sullivan and Cotter Holdings (Finance and Governance Committees) and has held prior board roles with Ascension Health (Vice Chair, and Chair of Compensation and Pension Committees), AMITA Health, the Catholic Healthcare Audit Network, and Catholic Health Initiatives. His executive experience includes senior leadership roles at Dignity Health, Catholic Health Initiatives, Revlon, Harvard University, and Shell Oil Company. He also served in the U.S. Air Force Chaplain’s Service and Social Actions Division. A strategic advisor on governance, talent capability, executive compensation and organizational culture, he is committed to advancing high-performing, mission-driven organizations. Herb holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and completed the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.
